| Affiliations: United Way funded organization | Other Affiliations/Accreditations: La Oportunidad maintains contracts with various schools and government agencies, in order to serve the Latino population with our culturally-specific educational and supportive services. These affiliations include the Minnesota Department of Public Safety: Youth Intervention Program, the City of Minneapolis: Empowerment Zone, Saint Paul Youth Services, Hennepin County, Ramsey County, Dakota County, and schools throughout metro area.
La Oportunidad’s staff and board continue to be involved in many specific efforts that impact the well being of the Latino community and address systemic change. They have actively and successfully been working on key issues for Latinos including a formal partnership with La Clínica and CLUES through a health disparity grant from the MN Department of Health. Most recently, La Oportunidad played a key role in establishing the first Latino Youth Development Collaborative in the state of Minnesota. The Collaborative is a partnership of non-profit organizations in Hennepin County committed to address the needs of Latino youth and their families. We also began a collaboration with BlueCross BlueShield of Minnesota called TeenLink Partners, a capacity-building initiative that partners with existing or emerging community agencies working with teens and their families. This mutually beneficial, multi-component partnership allows La Oportunidad to focus on building our capacity in order to further support healthy youth development through our Latino Youth Programs.
La Oportunidad also played an important role in the creation and launching of a Spanish community television program called En Familia/In Family, a program which is hosted by La Oportunidad’s Executive Director, Eloisa Echavez, and is produced and directed by Eduardo Bernal, a member of our Advisory Board. The program has dealt with topics such as winter safety, business ownership, parenting skills, community development, teenage pregnancy prevention, and immigrant rights and responsibilities.
