What You Should Know Before Donating Goods to a Charity
variousfabrics

  • Always contact a charity before donating to verify that it will accept your items.

  • Be sure all items are in good condition; many charities are forced to throw away items in poor condition. As well, the Pension Protection Act of 2006 toughened the rules for non-cash donations to charities. No tax deduction is allowed for items in less than good condition.

  • If an item isn't in good condition but is worth more than $500, a deduction is allowed with a qualified appraisal.

  • If you choose to take a tax deduction, the charity will need to supply you with a receipt. Please make sure you ask for one.

  • Some charities are willing to pick items up; others require donors to drop them off. Organizations that pick up items set their own schedules and may not be immediately available to come to your house.

SEARCH FOR CHARITIES THAT ACCEPT AUTOS OR OTHER GOODS   Search the Council's database of reviewed charities that accept donations of non-cash items like clothing, appliances, automobile, etc. Narrow your search by pick up or drop off availability.
